Quick Start Guide

This guide gets you started with a typical installation of IBM Rational Developer for i.

Product overview

IBM Rational Developer for i provides a single development environment for modern IBM i application development and modernization, allowing developers to create and maintain traditional RPG, COBOL, C, C++, DDS, and SQL applications, as well as extend those with services and application clients implemented using a variety of other technologies.

Step 1: Access your software and documentation

If you download your product from Passport Advantage®, follow the instructions in the support document available at http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27038505.

Installation information and release notes can be found in the product documentation at http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSAE4W. At the site, choose the version of the product that you want information about. The product web site is http://www.ibm.com/software/products/en/dev-ibm-i.

Step 2: Evaluate your hardware and system configuration

See the system requirements information at the product web site at http://www.ibm.com/software/products/us/en/dev-ibm-i.

Step 3: Install Rational Developer for i

If you are installing with administrator or root privileges:

From the downloaded electronic image, start the Launchpad application from the disk1 folder:
- For Windows: Run launchpad.exe. Note: You must log in to the Administrator account and run as Administrator; right-click the program file or shortcut and select Run as Administrator
- For Linux: Run launchpad.sh.
- For OS X: From Finder, run Launchpad.app
Read the Installation information and the release information.
When you are ready to begin installation, in the Launchpad dialog-box, click Install IBM Rational Developer for i.
IBM Installation Manager starts and opens the Install wizard. Follow the on-screen instructions in the wizard to complete the installation process.

To install Rational Developer for i as a non-administrative user, read the Installation information.

Step 4: Activate your license

By default, a 60-day trial license is enabled when you first install for each of the main features of Rational Developer for i. Use IBM Installation Manager to apply your license keys.

Start IBM Installation Manager.
Click Manage Licenses.
Follow the on-screen instructions in the Manage Licenses wizard to apply the license key or the activation kit for each Rational Developer for i feature that you installed. Any of the licensed features that are still installed with a 60-day trial license will need to be removed by using the Modify wizard in IBM Installation Manager when the trial expires.

Step 5: Install additional optional software

There is additional optional software that you can install. For information about these applications and installation instructions, see the Installation information at http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSAE4W. At the site, choose the version of the product that you want information about.
